Research Paper

A research paper is the first step towards building up your research and academic skills. A research paper is, in itself, a simple paper with some academic research in it. Normally it is written on a given topic or a problem, which has to be researched and presented in a scientific-like style. This is your 'academic playground', if you will, where you practice your research, analysis and writing skills while preparing for bigger projects that are lying up ahead in your academic career - bachelor's project, master's thesis or PhD dissertation.

So, a research paper inevitably involves a lot of background research. In most cases this means plenty of 'library digging'. Once you have found the right sources for your research paper, you will need to read through them, analyze ideas presented, understand the implications and decide whether this information can be useful in writing your research paper. The easier case is when your professor/teacher/instructor gives you a task to write a research paper based on given references. In this case your task is just to find the specified sources and use them in your research paper. In this is not the case, get ready. You will need a lot of patience and hours of thorough research. In this case one of the good things to do is to talk to your research advisor - s/he has for sure been in this 'business' longer than you and knows all the reputable people in this field. Consequently, this will save you precious time in the process of pulling together a research paper. With rare exception they are happy to share their experience, so don't be afraid to talk about it.

Once you are done with your reading and references selection, we recommend preparing an outline of the research paper. An outline helps you to organize your thoughts and ideas better, to make sure they are going from simple to complex and that they are all presented in a clear and logical manner. Once that is done, commence writing your research paper. Whatever the topic, work will be easier with the outline.

A few useful technical tips are: when working on the research paper of any kind, please remember that academic-style citing will be required, so first learn its standards. APA, MLA, Harvard, Oxford formatting all have different formatting requirements - it's always better to learn them in advance. Even better is to write down all the information regarding the book, journal, article etc: the author, title, year of publication, publishing house, number of pages and exact pages used, number of volume etc - all this has to be meticulously written down in advance. This strategy will help you later on, when you have to format or reformat the 'works cited' page of your research paper.

Once you are done with writing and formatting, go through your research paper once again to make sure it's just the way you want it. Normally a research paper would require one or several editing passes before final submission. Once the research paper is done it might require binding, so leave some time for that too.
